Celebrating Autumn

This month, we are celebrating fall. We'll be doing tons of different topics ranging from bats, owls, and ofcourse, pumpkins. This week will be full of fall activities and crafts and even cooking!

We already started our first day off with a fall scavenger hunt, making a "Fall Tree" with ornaments, and cooking homemade applesauce. The girls had so much fun today, that we didn't even get finished with "school" until 4:30 - but I didn't get a single complaint (we didn't even wake up until 9:30...so I guess they shouldn't complain). Besides, it doesn't seem like school when you are having fun! Enjoy some of our pictures below. I'll probably add more to my blog (www.meanttoteach.blogspot.com)by the end of the week.

EASY HOMEMADE APPLESAUCE

4 apples - peeled, cored and chopped
3/4 cup water
1/4 cup white sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Directions
In a saucepan, combine apples, water, sugar, and cinnamon. Cover, and cook over medium heat for 15 to 20 minutes, or until apples are soft. Allow to cool, then mash with a fork or potato masher.

How We Do Current Events as an Elective and Why I Think it is Important

When I sat down with my high schooler with a list of electives she could choose from to do this year, she chose current events as one of those. I thought I'd write a post on what we do for our current event subject. Each morning we start off with Channel One News . I was so glad when I came upon this website because I remember being in school and Channel One News came on every morning and we had to watch it in class. I'm not trying to make our homeschool like "public school", but my oldest and I grab a cup of coffee and just cozy up to watch the news like many Americans do in the morning. So I was thrilled to find it. It is definitely a news source that relates to middle school and high school students, even teaching them a "n ews related word of the day" that they may hear in stories in the video. Solar System Complete

Today, we completed our Solar System to go along with our Space Unit. The girls have enjoyed learning about space...now they want to go to space. This seems to happen with every lesson we have. We learn about dolphins; they want one. We learn about polar bears; they want to go to Canada to see one. We learn about penguins; they want to go to Antarctica. I'm really happy to see them so interested though. As I always say, "It's the most rewarding job ever." In the next couple of weeks, we have a little getaway planned to the space museum. The girls can't wait for that! FIELD TRIP! :)
